Club Service III
Membership

For Altadena Rotary, membership is so important that we have a directorate specifically assigned to that area of club Service. For us, membership is divided into the following four categories:

  • Membership Development,
  • New Member Mentoring,
  • Classification, and
  • Attendance.

    Membership Development
    Membership Development is an ongoing process that involves the entire club. Altadena Rotary Club is actively looking for individuals to join Rotary, a service organization with over 100 years of history servicing others. We encourage our members to bring guests to our meetings, and to sponsor at least one new member a year.

    The Classification membership drive is one way we do this. The idea is for our members to invite business owners, community leaders and others who represent classifications that are not currently part of our membership. This way we not only help our membership grow but to diversify as well.

    To accomplish this growth and diversification, we ask our members to invite their friends, their business associates, their neighbors and other people with whom they are acquainted to attend one of our weekly meetings.

    Mentoring New Members
    Mentoring New Members is a process of helping each new member understand the roles and activities preformed by the Altadena Rotary Club and to feel comfortable with our members. This helps new members get involved and integrated into the club. The sponsoring member is the leader in the mentoring of members he/she brings to the club. By this we mean that the Sponsoring Member is (by virtue of already having a relationship with the new member he/she has brought into the club) in the best position to answer questions about Rotary in general and Altadena Rotary in particular and to encourage early participation in Altadena Rotary activities and events and regular attendance.

    When new members are brought in, they are given a Red Badge. To earn a regular white badge, each Red Badger must fulfill five of the following seven tasks. This is usually accomplished well within the first year of membership. However, from time to time, a member decides to take pride in seeing how long he/she can stretch the process.

  • Give a Craft Talk -- A presentation about themselves, their business and their passions.
  • Participate on or chair a committee.
  • Perform a duty during a regular meeting, e.g.,:
    • Greeter,
    • Flag Salute,
    • Invocation, or
    • Hand badges to members as they enter the meeting, etc.
  • Sponsor a new member.
  • Create a flow diagram of Rotary, starting from Rotary International down through Altadena Rotary.
  • Attend a board meeting.
  • Attend a district function, e.g., District Assembly, District Conference, etc.

    Classification
    Classification is the process of identifying members and potential members by specific business classifications. Every Rotarian has the privilege and obligation to seek qualified members. In this way, all members can help our club achieve a full representation of the business and professional life of our community. Rotary International maintains a list of over 400 business classifications. As stated under Membership Development, our members are encouraged to become familiar with the classification list and to invite guests who represent categories and professions that are not among our current membership.

    Attendance
    Attendance is very important for any Rotary Club, especially Altadena Rotary. It is the strength and vitality of our club. When members regularly attend meetings, make up missed meetings and volunteer for service projects, it shows their commitment to Rotary’s purpose of Service Above Self. In addition, regular attendance helps our members form strong relationships that help them work together to accomplish the many projects and programs of Altadena Rotary and allows the giving of a helping hand (if needed) outside of Rotary.

    The Club Secretary keeps attendance records every week and reports them to District 5300 on a monthly basis. Our goal is to maintain an attendance record of over 67 percent month-to-month, year-after-year.

    So you can see that Club Service III is active in helping build a dynamic Altadena Rotary Club by maintaining high meeting attendance, building membership and mentoring new members to become long-term Rotarians.
